Wall tiles

‘t Achterhuis offers a large assortment of antique wall tiles that is regularly replenished. Sometimes these old wall tiles are referred to as old-fashioned wall tiles, but given the increasing demand for modern furnishings with, for example, a rustic kitchen or bathroom, this is not quite the correct designation.

Frisian whites and Old Dutch wall tiles

Frisian whites are still made according to traditional methods and the recipe for them dates back to the 17th century. Frisian whites have a typical size of 13 x 13 cm. They are made of calcareous clay and covered with a layer of white tin glaze which provides the classic ‘look and feel’. These whites don’t always have the exact same color white, but are offered in various color nuances. A commonly used tin glaze is craquelé, which creates a silky gloss effect. Frisian whites without craquelé looks more like high gloss. This type of wall tile is mainly found in the kitchen, but is actually used in all sanitary areas.

An antique tile tableau is often painted on whites with this craquelé glaze. The advantage is that the colors of the tile tableau on craquelé glaze stand out better. We often see a tileblateu as a beautiful decoration between the wall tiles in the kitchen.

Metro tiles

We also see more and more metro tiles in the kitchen, bathroom and even the living room. The name says it all, of course, but the original metro tile finds its origin in the older subway stations. The classic size is 7.5 x 15.2 cm with a clear facet border and is also available in 7.5 x 15 cm. Perhaps nice to know is that this faceted edge was used at the time to reflect more light in the subway stations. Surely not everyone can tell such a story about his wall tiles.

Viewing tiles

‘t Achterhuis has a permanent collection of about 350 fireplaces and it is of course an option to neatly finish these with antique fireplace tiles. These fireplace tiles are brickworked in front of the fireplace and provide an authentic look.
