‘t Achterhuis has a permanent collection of about 350 fireplaces of which about 150 original antique marble fireplaces. The assortment is continuously supplemented with special objects from all over the world. The old marble fireplaces are mostly from old castles and mansions in France and Belgium and can be subdivided according to type, origin or period and color.

Types of marble fireplaces

There are many names for antique marble fireplaces. For example, there is sometimes talk of a marble fireplace, but those are actually all fireplaces. In addition, marble fireplaces can be divided into 2 types: fireplace surrounds that are placed against and in front of the chimney breast and fireplace surrounds that are wider than the chimney breast and go around it. However, it is often possible to convert the one into the other. In addition, kitchen and castle fireplaces are well-known types of fireplaces. These are also available in sandstone.

Origin and periods

Roughly speaking, there is a choice of early marble stone fireplaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition, there are marble fireplaces from a somewhat later period, namely the 18th and 19th centuries. From this last period, the supply is the largest. This is mainly due to the fact that at the time of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis VI the best stone cutters were invited to the French court to cut exclusive fireplaces of rare Italian and French marbles. This made the marble fireplaces extra popular.
We see more and more people looking for a marble fireplace from the 30's and also for your 30's house we have the perfect marble fireplace.

Carrara white marble fireplace or other color?

Marble is a limestone that under prolonged pressure and heat transforms into marble. The colour changes from white to very beautiful colours and patterns. The most popular colour is the Carrara white marble fireplace. ‘t Achterhuis therefore has the most choice in this category. Besides white, a black marble fireplace or a coloured marble fireplace is very popular. A neutral white or black fireplace often fits in any interior.
